Everlasting Daisy

Rhodanthe chlorocephala ssp. Rosea

Locally grown by our neighbours at Littlefoot local.

25 g bag of hand harvested seed, mix will also contain some petal and stalk. Bag should cover over 3 square meters of garden bed.

Endemic to Western Australia, this annual everlasting daisy is a go-to-choice for creating pretty
native wildflower meadow effects in your garden. With flowers ranging from pure white to deep
pink with contrasting bright yellow or deep black centres, each stem is topped with a flower
appearing from August to November that opens in full sunshine, closing at night or in wet
conditions. Can attract a range of bees and other pollinating insects to your garden.
Be sure to grow in sandy open soil in sun to part shade, feed with native fertilizer and water in dry
weather and cut back old flowers to encourage reshooting. Everlastings can also be dried by
hanging upside down after cutting – pick in bud, they will open as they dry and retain their colour.
How to grow your pink and white everlastings:
Step 1
Choose a sunny spot in the garden for your pot. Fill the pot with a neutral or native Potting Mix, or
add Dynamic Lifter to a light sandy soil.
Step 2
Use a small handful per square meter if sowing direct to a garden bed. One tablespoon of seed
(from the Littlefoot Local 25g bag) per medium pot (diameter 25cm).
Scatter lightly across prepared raked or fluffy flower bed surface. Cover lightly with Seed Raising
Mix or a gentle brush with the flat side of your rake or hand. Keep the soil moist through the
germination period so the seeds don’t dry out. Protect from snails and slugs if your garden is
prone.
Step 3
Once seedlings have emerged, mulch with an organic mulch, such as sugar cane or pea straw and
water in well.
Step 4
Feed occasionally with Dynamic Lifter or a light Plant Fertiliser to ensure strong root
development.
Seed Collection
One flower head can provide 100-200 seeds, so why not grow your own seed supply!!! Spread it
around to other places in your garden, or give it away to friends!
This is how to collect your seed:
October and November are usually the seed collection months when flowers have finished their
vivid displays and are now ready for seed production.
First some basics. You must leave flower heads on plants that you want to set seed for collection.
It’s a common mistake to separate seeds from the plant before they’ve finished developing; any
collected too early will not be viable.
Let the seeds ripen on the plant until they are ‘almost’ ready t o disperse on their own. You will
know they are ready when the flower head loosens and falls apart, petals begin to fall off, and
the seed will start to become visible. The seed is located around the outside of the yellow flower
centre, where the petals join the flower head.
The seed is now ready to be collected!
I usually take the whole flower head and place it in a paper bag, or if you prefer, you can take just
the seed. Collected seed should be stored in a paper bag to allow moisture to escape.
If you are concerned about any seed-eating insects in your collection, place seed in the freezer
for 24 hours to do away with them!
Once seed is collected, you are free to remove the entire plant, or simply mow over the top of it!
You can now refresh your garden with new summer plants, and then expect everlastings to arrive
again the following year (if you left some seed behind)!
Seed collection is great fun and small children enjoy helping out with this activity! There is so
much seed, you will be surprised! So light and fluffy like snow!
